It all started when I watched a documentary about Andy Warhol and his portraits a few years ago. His fantasy of completely covering museum walls with portraits did not happen in his lifetime.
I decided to accomplish that idea myself. With the support of the de Saisset Museum and Rebecca M. Schapp, it took me two years of the hardest work to accomplish seventy-two portraits, which were displayed in the major museum show FACE in 2013.
I got so involved and interested in painting the human face that I continued the project for another four years. The size of the artwork changed to include some gigantic images . . . images started “doubling” in their appearance . . . and today I am pleased to present a 320-page book with 150 portraits as a report of the time spent.
A most remarkable experience has been working with the company Nostromo, whose app brings the book-reading experience to a previously unknown, amazing level.
This is one of the first art books in the world that can be transformed from a book into a movie theater. Just download the app PopovFACE and point your smart phone at the cover of the book. You will see a documentary by Celik Kayalar and talks by Valentin Popov, publisher Charlie Winton, Dale Djerassi, and many other participants in this project.
With this app, I can see a future for art books that will include tours of museums, meetings with artists, and visits to artists’ studios.
Please enjoy it!
